DEFINITION:

Parka is a long jacket with a hood which protects the wearer against rain and wind.
It is typically stuffed with down and very warm synthetic fiber and with a fur-lined good.
You can easily picture it in your head, can't you ?

A BIT OF HISTORY & ETYMOLOGY :

The word "parka" comes from the Russian word  "па́рка" .
This type of garment was first worn by the Nenets people, which are indigenous people in northen artic Russia. Also, the Amauti parka was worn by the Inuit women of the Eastern Canadian artic. The mothers used to carry their children in their hands in order to protect them.
Therefore, this traditional parka was designed to keep the child warm and safe from the wind and cold and it also helped to develevop bonding between mother and child.

Early 1950s : The N-3B "snorkel" parka was developed in the USA for military use - mainly for flight crews stationed in extremely cold areas.
Then, the fishtail parka was used by the USA army to help protect soldier in the Korean War.
The name fishtail comes from the fact that the coat is longer at the back than it is at the front.
In the 60s - in UK, the fishtail parka became a symbol of the mod-subculture.
Its place in popular culture was assured by newspaper pictures of parka-clad mods.

HOW TO WEAR IT NOW:

Nowadays, most modern parkas closely resemble the original 1950s design. Even though designers tend to reinvent it season after season, it is still one essential fall item that is really easy to be worn.

THE ARMY LOOK : Wear the parka with a pair of dark blue jeans, some black Doc Martens and a black t-shirt with golden studs.
THE LADYLIKE LOOK : Put on the lovely parka with lace detials from above and wear some nude Oxford Shoes.
THE BACK 2 SCHOOL LOOK : A classic parka with a nude dress underneath and a pair of UGG boots will do just fine.
THE FAMILY DINNER LOOK : Wear a parka on top of a red body hugger dress, a scarf around your head and some knee-high boots. The result will be amazing !
